Venezuelan statesman and author. Gallegos, was the first popularly elected President of Venezuela. He held the post from February 1948 to October 1948. That same year he was ousted during a military coup perpetrated by General Marcos Perez Jimenez and he went into exile. In 1958 Gallegos returned to Venezuela and was voted life membership in the senate. He was also the author of the books, "El Ultimo Solar" (1920), "Dona Barbara" (1931), "El Forastero" (1942) and "Sobre La Misma Tierra" (1943).
