Major League Baseball Player. He was a shortstop, making his debut with the Cincinnati Reds on September 9, 1936. For fourteen seasons, he played with the Cincinnati Reds (1936 to 1937, 1943 to 1947), Boston Braves (1939 to 1942), Philadelphia Phillies (1948 to 1949) and St. Louis Cardinals in 1950. In 1940, he was the highest paid player on the Boston Braves' roster at $15,000 and was an All-Star (1940 to 1941, 1943). He finished his career with a record of 539 runs scored, 1,270 hits, 97 home runs, 640 runs batted in, a .238 batting average and a .972 fielding percentage.
