"Sacred to the memory of GOLDING CONSTABLE, who died the 14th. day of May 1816, aged 78 years. Sacred to the memory of ANN, the wife of Golding Constable, who died the 6th. day of March 1815, aged 67 years." Golding Constable owned two watermils and a windmill on the banks of the River Stour. In 1767, he married Ann Watts, the eldest daughter of William Watts, a cooper of Upper Thames Street in London. They had six children, of whom the fourth was John Constable (q.v.), the landscape painter, who is buried at St. John's Church in Hampstead, North London, along with his wife, Maria. The other side of this grave bears the inscription : "Sacred to the memory of HUGH GOLDING CONSTABLE, who died February 12th. 1949, aged 80, also of his wife ELINOR MAY, who died January 26th. 1947, aged 74."
