US Congressman. Born the only son of three children at "Old Castle," near Eastville, Virginia, his parents were John Stratton and his wife Gertrude Tazewell Stratton. He was educated locally and attended the common public schools as a child. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced. He then entered politics and was elected and served a term as a Member of the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1789 to 1792. He married Lucy Digges in Yorktown, Virginia, on January 3, 1793, and the couple would have six children together, three boys and three girls. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected in 1800. A Member of the Federalist Party, he then served Virginia's 12th District (Seventh Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1801 to March 3, 1803. After his term in the United States Congress expired, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Thomas Griffin on March 4, 1803. After leaving the United States Congress, he resumed his practice of law until his death. He died in Norfolk, Virginia, on May 10, 1804, at the age of 34, and was buried in unmarked grave in Saint Pauls Episcopal Churchyard in that city.
