Politician. He was an Argentinean politician who served as Vice-President during the Domingo F. Sarmiento Administration from 1868 to 1874 and War Minister during the Nicolás Avellaneda administration from 1874 to 1877. He was one of the founders of the Autonomist Party and later, with Nicolás Avellaneda, the National Autonomist Party. Born the only son of a politician, his family went into exile in Uruguay in 1835, returning to Argentina in 1852. After finishing law school, he joined the Unitarian army in the civil war and entering into politics in 1860, was part of the constitutional reforms that followed. He was the governor of the province of Buenos Aires from 1866 until 1868. To honor him, Plaza Alsina is located in Adolfo Alsina District of Buenos Aires with one side facing the street Leandro N. Além. In Plaza Libertad, a huge statue of him was erected. A nearby street is named Adolfo Alsina Street. He died of renal failure at age 48.

Gravesite Details

Marker is polished red granite, designed by sculptor Margarita Bonnet in 1917. Three bronze figures, representing Navigation, Agriculture and the Republic are seated around Alsina. Bas reliefs depict different stages of his public.
