Boer War British Victoria Cross Medal recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifle Battalion, South Africa. On November 7, 1900, Sergeant Holland was part of a small rearguard troop assigned to protect the withdrawal of British Infantry from the Komati River. When advancing Boers were attacking the retreat column, he held off the enemy with his Colt gun and kept them away from two 12-pounder canons until the withdraw was complete. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
