U.S. Senator. Moving with his parents to Nevada in 1876, he attended the University of the Pacific, graduated in law from the University of Michigan in 1895, was admitted to the bar in 1896 and commenced to practice law in Elko, Nevada. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Lieutenant in Colonel Torrey’s Rough Riders. After the war, he was district attorney of Elko County, (1901-05), a member of the Nevada State House of Representatives, (1905-07) and a regent of the University of Nevada, (1907-17). In 1918, he was as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Francis G. Newlands, serving until 1921. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, (1934-47), president of the Elko Telephone & Telegraph Company and a director of the Western Pacific Railroad.
