U.S. Senator. During World War I, he served overseas as a Sergeant in Company A, 34th Engineers, U.S. Army, (1918-19). After the war, he engaged in the seed and nursery business, operated a radio station at Yankton, South Dakota, (1926-32) and was in the oil business, (1932-36). In 1938, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1951. After leaving the Senate, he was chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board, (1951-64). He died in retirement at age 88.
