US Congressman, Civil War Confederate Army Officer, CSA Senator. A graduate of the law department of Transylvania University, he established his practice in Paris, Kentucky. At the outbreak of the Mexican War he raised and became the Captain of a company of the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. In 1858 he was elected to represent Kentucky's 8th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1858 until 1861 (he unsuccessfully ran for re-election). In September 1861 became the Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Battalion Kentucky (CSA) Cavalry, serving under General Humphrey Marshall in western Virginia. He resigned his commission in February 1862, having been appointed as one of Kentucky's Senators to the Confederate Congress. Following the end of the war he fled to Canada until 1866 when he returned to Kentucky and resumed his law practice.
