British Royalty. Duke of Albany. Born Leopold George Duncan Albert, he was the fourth and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He inherited haemophilia, and he was always thin and sickly. He spent most of his childhood as a semi-invalid. He entered Christ Church, Oxford in 1872, and left university with an honorary doctorate in civil law in 1876. Unable to pursue a military career due to his illness, he instead became a patron of the arts and literature. He served as president of both the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Society of the Arts, and was his mother's private secretary. He married Princess Helena of Waldeck on April 27, 1882 at St. George's Chapel, and the couple had two children: Alice and a posthumous son, Charles. Leopold died at the age of 30 in Villa Nevada, Cannes of a brain hemorrhage as a result of a fall.
