U.S. Continental Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Dover, Delaware. He served as a Lieutenant in the Dover Militia in 1756 and was a member of the council of safety (1776, 80). In 1777, he was elected a member of the First Continental Congress, was clerk of the peace, (1777-92) and prothonotary of Kent County (1777-93). From 1792, he was judge of the High Court of Errors and Appeals of Delaware, until his death. His great-grandson George Sykes, served as a Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War.
