`Wichita Boy Was Drowned
Died in Blue River Saturday Evening
Eugene Allagier was 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Allgaier, 857 St. Francis
Eugene Allgaier, the 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Allgaier, 857 St. Francis Avenue, was drowned Saturday evening in the Blue River, seven miles east of Kansas City.
Young Allgaier and six of his companions, in the employ of the Fowler Packing Company, Kansas City, Saturday afternoon went out to the Blue River on a picnic expedition. Five of them went swimming. They swam across the river and were making their way back. When half way across the stream Eugene went down. He failed to rise. His companions secured a boat and rowing to the point where the lad sank, several of them dived but were unable to locate the body. Just before he went down the lad was seen to struggle in the water and a few minutes later bubbles arose near the point where he sank. Strenuous efforts were made to rescue him, but as he sank in fifteen feet of water, it was impossible to recover the body until five hours later.
W. T. Moncrief of this city, received word of the drowning. Hastening to the home, 857 St. Francis, he found no one at home except a son, Creel. Mrs. Allgaier was at Orendo, OK., visiting relatives, while Mr. Allgaier, who travels for Reid, Murdoch & Company, Chicago, was at Stillwater, Ok. Both Mr. and Mrs. Allgaier hurried home. The body, accompanied by a friend and fellow workman, George Goelitzer, of Kansas City, arrived this morning over the Santa Fe at 5:45 o'clock.
The funeral was held this afternoon at 5:30 o'clock from the pro-cathedral. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
Eugene Allgaier and Ralph Helm, of this city, who has drowned in the Little River a few weeks ago, were schoolmates, having attended High school together.
Eugene Allagier went to Kansas City last September. He is survived by one brother and two sisters, besides his parents. He was a student at High school until he went to Kansas City, was a great favorite among his friends and was the life of the crowd. He was employed at the former Weinschenk Grocery here during several summers and would have graduated from High school this spring had he remained in the city. [Wichita Beacon, July 15, 1907.
