Civil War Union Soldier. He served as a member of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, and died July, 1863, from wounds he had received a few weeks earlier at the Battle of 2nd Winchester, Virginia. He is reputed to have been the fiancee of Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade, who became famous as the only civilian casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg. Jennie and Jack had grown up together and their fathers had worked together. As they grew closer, their childhood friend, Wesley Culp, had been something of a message bearer, although he had fought for the Confederates. Jack sent a message of fidelity to Jennie, through Wesley, as the Battle of Gettysburg broke out. All three childhood friends died in the war, Jennie in her sister's home baking bread for soldiers, Wesley on Culp's Hill outside town and Jack at the Battle of Carter's Woods. Jack and Jennie are both buried close together in Evergreen cemetery.
