U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the literary department of Cumberland University, in 1848, from the law department of that institution in 1849, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Lebanon, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1857 to 1858). During the entire Civil War, he served as a Lt. Colonel of the 38th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate Army. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress, serving (1871 to 1873). An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 66.
