My uncle, Thomas Ennis Hatch, began his career at sea at the age of 16, when he became a cadet on the steamship Philadelphia. During WWI, he served on the USS May from 1917-1919, then on the USS Harrington for nine more months, first getting out of the Navy on June 17, 1920. Between the wars, he served in the Merchant Marines. He returned to the Navy during WWII, serving as a commander. He was commanding officer of the USS Ashland in the Pacific theater.
