US Senator. At the beginning of The Civil War, he joined the state militia as a lieutenant of the "Meagher Guards of the First Regiment, Carolina Rifle Militia, CSA." He was appointed as a Senator from Georgia to the the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Alfred H. Colquitt, serving from 1894 to 1895. He unsuccessful sought to retain his seat, and lost the renomination for it in 1894.
