Roman Catholic Leader. Japanese religious figure and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of Shittsu, near Nagasaki, he studied at the Roman schools of the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum "De Propaganda Fide" and the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum San Apollinare. He was ordained in the Eternal City on December 22, 1928. Later, he came back to Japan and did pastoral work in the archdiocese of Tokyo and was a faculty member of its seminary, from 1931 to 1936. He acted as secretary to the apostolic delegate in Japan, from 1936 to 1940 until he was appointed Apostolic administrator of the diocese of Osaka, on November 30, 1940. He was consecrated bishop of Osaka, on December 14, 1941 and from 1941 to 1962, he had also the charge of Apostolic administrator of the prefecture apostolic of Shikoku. He became Archbishop of Osaka when that see was elevated to metropoliton rank, on July 24, 1969. He served as President of the Episcopal Conference of Japan, from 1970 to 1978. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal, on March 5, 1973. He passed away in his city of Osaka.
