World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the 16th Battalion of the South & Western Australian Imperial Forces. During the attack at Madam Wood, France, on September 23, 1918, Lieutenant McCarthy ran to the nearest enemy post and single handedly captured the German gun. He continued his way down the trench, inflicting heavy casualties and capturing three more machine guns. For most extreme gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in December, 1918.
