World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 48th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force during the First World War. On September 18, 1918, near Le Verguier France, Private Woods took command of a small patrol, attacked and captured a formidable German enemy post. With just two other comrades, he held against heavy counterattacks and kept on firing, inflicting severe casualties while holding off the enemy until help arrived. For courageous bravery under enemy fire, he was awarded the British Victoria Cross in December 1918.
