World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Ballinookera, Ireland, he served as a Corporal in the 1st Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers, British Army. At Gallipoli, Turkey, on April 26, 1915, three companies of Munsters, were charged to take the village behind the Sedd el fort overlooking the bay. Corporal Cosgrove led a company section during the attack on the Turkish positions. Corporal Cosgrove on his own, went forward under heavy fire and pulled down the posts of the enemy’s high wire entanglements, contributing to the successful clearing of the heights. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross on August 23, 1915. After the disbanding of the Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1922, Cosgrove transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was promoted Staff Sergeant Instructor and served with the Kolar Gold Fields Battalion Auxiliary Forces in India. He retired from the Army in 1934 and due to his wartime injuries, he died at age 47 in Millbank Military Hospital, London, England.
