Civil War New Jersey Governor. He served as the 27th and 30th Governor of New Jersey. He was first elected as a Democrat in the midst of the Civil War, succeeding Republican Governor Charles Olden, and serving from 1863 to 1866. He was again elected in 1871, succeeding Governor Theodore F. Randolph, and serving from 1872 to 1875.
