Monegasque Prince. First son of Ercole Grimaldi, he succeeded his grandfather Honorè due to the premature death of the father (1662). He radically changed the foreign policy of the Principality, until then pro-Spanish, and linked the political and economic destinies to the France of Louis XIV. This alliance left him little room for maneuver in domestic politics and therefore he devoted himself to a military career by participating, among other things, in the Dutch War (1672-1678) and the reconquest of the Franche-Comté (1674). Louis I of Monaco was also a French ambassador to the Holy See (1689). He died at the age of fifty-eight from a haploplectic stroke.
