U.S. Senator. He graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1834, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1837 and commenced to practice law in Epping, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1842-43, 46, 54-55). In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Bell, serving until when he resigned in 1861. He then was a United States District Judge from 1866 until his death at age 81.
