US Congressman. He graduated from University of North Carolina, as a pharmacist in 1912. During World War I, he served as a Pharmacist’s Mate in the United States Navy. After the war, he resumed his career as a druggist, was a trustee of the University of North Carolina, was a member of the Chapel Hill City Council, and a member of the school board of Chapel Hill, and on the Orange County Board of Commissioners. In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next ten succeeding Congresses, serving until 1961. After his final term, he retired from public service. In 2015, the North Carolina Orange County Commissioners erected a historical highway marker at the corner of Carl Durham Road and Hwy-54 in his honor.
