Professional Golfer. Born in East Orange, New Jersey, she was raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is considered one of the greatest female golfers in the sport's history. She graduated from University of North Carolina, in 1928 and since female students then could not compete in sports, she took up golfing. She won the North Carolina's first Amateur tournament in 1932 and became the first woman to win the North and South Pinehurst in 1935. Other titles included the 1946 Southern Amateur, 1947 Mid-South Amateur and Women's Carolinas Amateur (1932-52). She never turned professional, but competed in many early pro events as an amateur and held several leadership positions in the US Women's Open. She won singles victories in two United States Curtis Cup triumphs over Great Britain, in (1938, 1948) and was the first female to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1963. She died at age 63 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
