This is one of several shrines for the spirit of Sugawara-no-Michizane (845-903), a noted statesman and scholar. This particular shrine has been built on the the site of his former home. Following his death, after he had been banished from Kyoto due to false accusations, a variety of of disasters struck Kyoto. His angry spirit was thought to be responsible so this shrine and others were built to enshrine and appease him. He is also known by the names "Tenmangu" and "Tenjin."
