U.S. Congressman. After attending Cambridge Academy, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced to practice law in Cambridge, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney of Guernsey County (1845 to 1847), served as Mayor of Cambridge, Ohio and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1860. In 1863, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress, serving until 1865. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
