Crimean War Victoria Cross War Medal Recipient. Born in Dundee, Scotland, he served as a Private in the 92 Regiment of Foot, British Army, attached to the 55th Regiment of Foot. On November 5, 1854, during the Battle of Inkerman, Crimea, Private Beach was on picquet duty with the 41st Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Carpenter. Suddenly several Russians attacked and Lieutenant Colonel Carpenter was lying wounded on the ground. Private Beach killed two of the Russians and protected Lieutenant Colonel Carpenter until the arrival of some other men from the 41st Regiment came to his assistance. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was invested with his Victoria Cross by Lieutenant General Sir J. Fergusson, GOC Gibraltar in July 1857. In 1863, he left the Army and returned Dundee, Scotland, where he died in the Royal Infirmary, from what was thought to be severe alcoholism at age 40.
