U.S. Congresswoman. In 1951, she was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, Frank Buchanan, reelected to the Eighty-third and Eighty-fourth Congresses, serving until her death at age 53. She is the first female U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania, to ever die while in office.
