Pennsylvania Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Princeton University in 1904, studied at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1907. He was associated with the law firm of Duff, Scott & Smith in Pittsburgh and was Pennsylvania State Attorney General, (1943-47). In 1947, he was elected as a Republican the 34th Governor of Pennsylvania, serving until 1951. While in office, he developed the Philadelphia port area, made construction of new bridges over the Delaware River, expanded overcrowded mental hospitals and raised the salaries of Pennsylvania’s teachers. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1951-57). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in the practice of law in Washington, D.C., until his death at age 86.
