Major League Baseball Manager, Team Executive. Long time General Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, and architect of the late 1970s and early 1980s Phillies teams that featured stellar players like Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Larry Bowa and Greg Luzinski. Nicknamed "The Pope," he was responsible for deals, trades and draft picks that helped the Phillies shake off their history of fielding horrible teams, and helped them reach the post-season six times between 1976 and 1983. His signing of star Pete Rose away from the Cincinnati Reds in 1979 was the final key element that brought the Phillies only World Series triumph in 1980. In 1972 he managed the Phils for the last 80 games of the season after firing Manager Frank Lucchesi. In 1983, while the Phillies were in First Place, he fired manager Pat Corrales, and took over the field management himself. He guided the Phillies to the National League pennant, and skippered them in the 1983 World Series, where they lost to the Baltimore Orioles 4 Games to 1. He relinquished the manager’s position after a disappointing 1984 season, and returned to the front office, where he filled various positions right up until his passing away. During World War II he served in the United States Army in the Corps of Engineers.
