Thomas Henry Carpenter, 81, of Niota, died Wednesday morning at Life Care Center of Athens.

A lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was the son of the late John and Annie Simpson Carpenter. He was associated with South Central Bell Telephone Company for 40 years, and was serving as plant supervisor in the Sweetwater office at the time of his retirement. He was a member of Niota United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Warren Carpenter of Niota; one daughter and son-in-law, Samme and Marvin Templin of Ooltewah; one son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Lynda Carpenter of Niota; one granddaughter, Mrs. Junior (Kim) Vaughn of Athens; three grandsons, William H. Carpenter Jr. and Tony Lee Dorsey, both of Niota, and Sammy B. Axley Jr. of Ooltewah; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Stair of Athens and Mrs. Hubert (Effie Mae) Guinn of Lenoir City; and one brother, William F. Carpenter of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Ogle Wattenbarger and Lay Leader J. Neal Ensminger officiating. Burial will follow in Tranquility Cemetery.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The body will be at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Friday where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m.
