Philosopher, Author. He was an Italian philosopher of law and political sciences and a historian of political thought, who was considered by many one of the most important philosophers of the second half of the Twentieth Century. Born into a well-to-do family, he was a participant from youth in the National Fascist Party regime but during World War II in 1942 became anti-Fascist, being arrested twice for engaging in resistance activities. After the war, he was a political candidate without success, thus returning to education. Later in his life, he was made Senator for life to Italian government in 1984. He had earned degrees in jurisprudence in 1931 and philosophy in 1933 at University of Turin. His first book was "The Phenomenological Turn in Social and Legal Philosophy" in 1934. In 1944 he published his first book in English, "The Philosophy of Decadence," a critical study of existentialism. He published two texts on law, "A Theory of Judicial Norms" in 1958 and "A Theory of the Legal Order" in 1960. A prolific author, he published over 40 textbooks including an autobiography in 1999. He sold thousands of books along with regularly writing articles for newspapers. One of the central objectives of the work of Bobbio is to reflect on contemporary democracy, through a critical examination. After being a professor at a few universities, he became professor of legal philosophy at University of Turin in 1948, remaining at that position until 1972, then becoming professor of political philosophy from 1972 to 1979, which followed being Emeritus Professor of Legal and Political Philosophy. In 1960 he became a national member of the Turin Academy of Sciences and in 1966 a national member of the Accademia dei Lincei. He received numerous honors and awards locally, but internationally, he was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994 and a Corresponding Associate of the British Academy in 1966. For being recognized internationally, the Balzan Prize of Law and Political Science was awarded to him in 1994. He received Honorary degrees from several universities, including University of Paris, University of Bologna, and University of Buenos Aires.
