U.S. Congressman. Educated at Princeton University, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1799 and practiced law in New Bern, North Carolina. He served as a clerk and master in equity, plus was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1798-99). In 1801, he was elected as a Federalist to the Seventh Congress, serving until 1803 and reelected to the Eleventh Congress, serving (1809-11). After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law and was again a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1812-15, 18-19, 23-26). After his death, Stanly County, North Carolina, was named in his honor in1841.
