U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Wake Forest College, North Carolina, in 1888, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1890 and practiced law in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. In addition to his law practice, he also served as assistant registrar of deeds for Halifax County, North Carolina. In 1910, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death from complications of influenza and pneumonia.
