Roman Catholic Pope. Born Gerbert of Aurillac near what is now aint-Simon, Cantal, France, he was elected as Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on April 2, 999. His pontificate lasted about 4 years and crossed the threshold of the famous year 1000. Pope Sylvester II tried to stem immoral behavior. He was extremely learned and introduced the use of Arab numbers. He is said to have invented the balance-wheel, which was used till 1640 and then replaced by the pendulum clock. He pontificate ended when he died in 1003.
