Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company D, 54th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on June 5, 1864 at Piedmont, Virginia. His citation reads "Capture of flag of 45th Virginia (C.S.A.)." His name is on a bronze plaque attached to a Civil War monument located in Veterans Square in the town.
