Actor and Producer. Best known for his starring roles in Akira Kurosawa films, as the Samurai or Rōnin warrior. His forceful personality, projected through his baleful expressions and a dynamic physical presence, was perfect for iconic "warrior" roles. His critically-acclaimed performances earned him numerous awards, accolades and international recognition, over his lengthy career from 1947 until his passing. Often referred to, by some, as "Japan's John Wayne," his extensive filmography of over 200 film, include such notable titles as; Stray Dog (1949), Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957), The Hidden Fortress (1958), Yojimbo (1961), Grand Prix (1966), Red Sun (1971), Midway (1976), 1941 (1979), and the TV mini-series epic, Shogun (1980). Prior to his acting career, he served at the rank of Sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army, aviation branch, in an aerial photography unit during World War II.
