Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York at the age of 18 and graduated in 1855. His Civil War service began in 1861 on the staff of Major General David Hunter in Kansas, then on the staff of General Benjamin Butler in New Orleans, Louisiana. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers, in 1864 he led a division of the XVIII Corps in action at Petersburg, Virginia. At the end of the war he commanded a division in Major General John Gibbon's XXIV Corps in the Appomattox campaign. He was brevetted Major General, US Volunteers in 1864, and brevetted Brigadier General and Major General, US Regular Army in 1865.
