Civil War Union Army Officer. Immigrating to America in 1836, he was a builder and opened his own construction business in 1844, which became the largest the largest building firm in Patterson, New Jersey. With the advent of the Civil War, Derrom joined the Union cause and was elected Colonel in command of the 25th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He led his corps in actions at the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Mud March Offensive and Siege of Suffolk. As part of the Army of the Potomac, he also used his engineering skills for bridge building assignments. After the war, he returned to his construction business and established the public parks systems for all of Paterson. He served as a city alderman, president of the Paterson City Council, president of the board of education and superintendent of public schools.
