Helen, born in Brady, Texas, was the daughter of Ethel Bingham and Bell Bradshaw, the paternal granddaughter of James Henry Bradshaw and Minnie Ann Bowers, and the maternal granddaughter of David Mack Bingham and Benson Bellzora Wilson.

In 1943 following a two week romance, she married an airman, Eugene "Gene" Polhemus, stationed in Brady, Texas. Following the birth of her first daughter, the family moved to Atlanta, Nebraska, and not long after to a farm south of town.

In 1955 the family that had increased by two more children moved to Holdrege, where she went to work as a waitress at the Regal Steakhouse not long after giving birth to her last child. She was a first-class waitress who was very popular with the clientele. After 13 or 14 years of waitressing, she accepted a job at Noble Drugstore, where she was employed until her death. She also sewed clothing for people and especially enjoyed creating things for those who had difficulty finding garments to fit. She had a very tender heart.

She loved the sun, dancing, sewing, and her family and friends. She died very suddenly of a heart attack or stroke (an autopsy was not performed). In addition to her spouse, Gene, Helen was survived by two daughters, Sandra and Susan, both of Lincoln; two sons, Edward and Lee, both of Holdrege; a sister and brother-in-law, Jessie (Bradshaw) and Donald Woodard, of Dallas, Texas; and six half-brothers and sisters, all of Texas. Even after all these years she is still sorely missed. Rest in gentle peace, Mom.
