Scientist. A NASA aeronautical engineer, his design of the Mercury space capsule allowed astronauts to return from space. Early spaceships had a needle-nose design to reduce resistance making them about impossible to protect from re-entry caused heat. His blunt nose design for the Mercury mission created a shock wave to deflect heat. The design was continued on the Gemini and Apollos spacecraft and was adopted by the Soviets for their Soyuz spacecraft. He received numerous honors and awards, including the Arthur S. Fleming Award, the NASA Medal for Outstanding Leadership, and honorary doctorate of engineering degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Louisiana State University. Inducted into the National Space Hall of Fame in 1969 and the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2003. Author of the book "Manned Space Flight" and numerous technical papers on aircraft performance, rocketry and reentry theory.
