Violinist, Composer. He began taking violin instruction from his father at the age of five and made his first public appearance in Warsaw, Poland at the age of seven. He later studied the instrument under virtuoso Leopold Auer and studied composition under composer Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. By 1913 he was heading the violin and chamber music departments at Russia's Kharkiv Conservatory and from 1916 to 1918 he served in the Russian Army. From 1919 to 1922 Achron performed in over 1,000 concerts in Russia and Europe. In the early 1920s he resided in Berlin, Germany and co-ran a Jewish music publishing company. He moved to the United States in 1925, settled in New York City, New York, taught violin at the Westchester Conservatory in White Plains, New York, and in 1927 performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He also composed music for Maurice Schwartz' Yiddish Art Theatre in New York. Moving to Los Angeles, California in 1934, he composed music for motion pictures and continued performing as a concert violinist. Following his death from a long illness, most of his composition manuscripts were sent to Tel Aviv University in Israel, where they remain in a conservatory named in his honor. His younger brother, Isidor Achron, achieved fame himself as a composer.
