Leola, my mom, was very ill in her last years. She suffered from emphysema, malnutrition, and hardening of the arteries. I lived 40 miles away and worked fulltime, so couldn't cook for her very often. My dad ate out a lot and brought meals home to her, but she didn't have an appetite and wouldn't eat properly.

My mother holding me in the front yard of our home in Taft, Calif. Since I was born on Apr. 9, 1937, I certainly wasn't very old when this photo was taken. I noticed that mom is wearing her waitress uniform, so she is still working at the Savoy Hotel in Taft where she met my dad.

My loving parents attended my marriage to Wiley Simmons, along with Wiley's mom, Rettie Simmons Clayton. It was a backyard wedding on June 22, 1976. They were so happy that I had found happiness once again, after my first husband died in 1974. I met Wiley at the sheriff's office, where I obtained employment after James died.
