Netta Mary (or Mary Annette) Raef May was the daughter of Louis T Raef and Josephine Paulus Long Raef. She married Ira I May on April 24, 1914. They had four children: Melvin, Rhea, Mildred and George. She died of influenza at the age of 26, 8 days after their son George James May was born. The boys were raised by their father Ira and the two girls were raised by Netta's half-sister Josephine Long Resch.

Her son Melvin died in 1922 at the age of 7. George died at the age of 19 in 1939 in a car accident. Melvin and George lay on either side of her in the family cemetery. Rhea died at the age of 28 in 1945. Mildred, her remaining child, lived a very long and happy life and died at the age of 82.

Mrs. Ira May, a young married woman of near Boos Station, died last night from influenzal-pneumonia, following child-birth a couple of weeks ago. She was a daughter of the late Louis Raef and his first wife, and is survived by her husband, four children and other relatives.

Mrs. Ida [sic] May, who died in her home in Newton, Monday, from an attack of the "flu" was held Wednesday morning in that city. Mrs. May leaves her husband and four children, and her mother. Mrs. Fred Althaus of Mattoon is a sister. Mrs. Charles Sullivan a half-sister and Mrs. William P. Grover and A. J. Raef, an aunt and uncle.
