According to the 1930 Tacoma City Directory, Dan was a millworker at Buffelin Lumber and Manufacturing Company located at Taylor Way and Lincoln Ave. on the Tacoma tideflats. Within a year, he would lose his arm at that mill. The directory said he lived at Buffelin Boarding House.
