Civil War Union Soldier. He enrolled in Company G, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1863, and was mustered in as a Private on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then was found to gave deserted on January 20, 1863. He returned to duty on April 8, 1863, taking advantage of a Presidential Proclamation that offered full clemency to Union Army desertees if they voluntarily returned. He then served in the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably discharged with his regiment on June 27, 1863.
