William Habeck, Sr. AKA Joachim Johannis, was born in Klowitz, Pomerania, Prussia.

He was a Civil War Veteran; enlisted as a Private Co. C Second Regiment US Infantry on 21 January 1863 using the name Johannis, at Ft. Hamilton, NY. He was discharged 13 September 1865.

May have served in the Co. I 175th NY Inf as well based on information from his pension card.

He married Marie Helene Dirsing March 18, 1866 and they had 12 living children:

He was an expert cabinet maker.

He was head of the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, NY. Traveling home on the trolley after work, he was reading his newspaper when he dropped dead. It was his custom to bring home flowers for his wife and a bouquet of flowers was found beside him.
