B-25C #41-12470, along with 4 other B-25's, took off 7 Mile Drome, Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a mission to attack enemy seaplanes anchored off Gasmata, West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.
Prior to arriving at their target the formation of B-25's were attacked by multiple Japanese fighter planes. B-25C #41-12470 was shot down and crashed into the sea.
B-25C 41-12792 was also shot down on this mission. The other 3 B-25's were able to return to the 7 Mile Drome.
Walter was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the "Silver Star", "Distinguished Flying Cross", and the Purple Heart.

The aircraft was not shot down over the sea. It was shot down over land and crashed near the PNG village of Isoge. US and Australian authorities have visited the site multiple times.
