Alfred Dorsey Stanley, called Dorsey, was born on a sugar plantation in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, the oldest of four children. His father, Alfred Moore Stanley, died young, leaving his widow, Emily Donoho Stanley, to take care of the four children and the plantation from his death in 1853 until her death in 1866. Dorsey moved to Hinds County, Mississippi, as a young man. He married Cornelia C. Bracey, and they had seven children: Mary, Cornelia, Alfred, Agnes, Eva, Arlean, and Vivian.
